I am a Mixed Media Abstract Expressionist, and I work with light and reflection. My paintings -- and my life — are spiritual in nature. I have been attracted to anything with a shine, a light or a sparkle since I was very young. I grew up in New England and remember how the snow sparkled after a snowstorm, especially when the sun or moon -- the light — hit it. There was so much motion in that motionless snow. No matter where you went it just kept reflecting back at you.
As a Spiritualist, I have spent my whole life reflecting upon the question, "Why are we here?" My spiritual journey goes hand in hand with my artistic journey; my canvases are ever reflections of light, energy, motion and divinity awakened. I use broken and shattered glass, beads, glitter, mica and other reflective surfaces to capture the light in the room with the hope of enlightening the viewer to the possibility of a Divine Experience, or the possibility of recognizing the Light within Self. Simply by moving around the canvas, the viewer will often capture their own reflection in the materials, therefore becoming one with the canvas. Depending on the time of day, or the light — or lack of it — within the room, each of my canvases is a constantly changing reflective pool of energy and light. We human beings are never stagnant. With each second that ticks by we are in constant motion, always changing, creating our lives moment by moment. This is the human experience that I am attempting to capture in my work. It has taken me 25 years to learn how to work with these materials; it has simultaneously taken me 25 years to evolve into the spiritual being I am. I can honestly say that at this point in my life I have discovered for myself the answer to the question, "Why are we here?" and it is reflected to you, the viewer, in my artwork. |
